Rahu yantra: As one would know, in the Indian Vedic astrology, there are 9 planets. In fact, there are 7 planets and two shadow planets. Why two shadow planet and who are they? Rahu and ketu or the North and South Nodes, known in astrology are the two shadow planets. They are known as Nodes, since, the two lack any form or shape and are mere mathematical points in astrology. More so, there is a mythological story attached to the two of them. The existence of Rahu and Ketu is closely lined to this story. In Hindu mythology, one would have heard of Mohini, a divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The story goes like this. Once is so happened that lord Indra, the king of Devatas, was riding on his elephant. Rishi Durvasa (a sage) saw lord Indra and he offered him a garland. Indra accepted the garland with a smile and placed it on the trunk of his elephant. But as soon as he placed the Garland, the elephant got irritated by the scent of the garland and threw it on the ground. Seeing this enraged Rishi Durvasa and he cursed lord Indra and all the Devatas to forget their Divya Shakti, meaning divine powers. The devatas were shocked to hear this curse.

In such a condition the Daanavas or also known as asuras attacked the Heavens and conquered the whole universe of the Devatas. The Devatas approached their supreme father and creator of the universe, Lord Brahma for his help. Listening to their painful experience, he guided them to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the entire universe. Lord Vishnu drew a plan and suggested Devatas to approach the Asuras and ask them for their co-operation in churning the mighty ocean to obtain amrita, an elixir of immortality. The Devatas approached their rival asuras who agreed as this task required the combined efforts of both Devatas and Asuras. The duo started churning the mighty ocean, using Mount Mandara as a rod and the Serpent (Snake) Vasuki as a rope. Lord Vishnu incarnated as a Tortoise to hold up the mountain on his back.

As the churning of the ocean started, several things emerged as a result, starting with poison Halahala which threatened to destroy the universe but Lord Shiva kept it in his throat, without swallowing it. Then came Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow, celestial horse Ucchaishravas, Airavata, the celestial elephant, the Kausthubha gem, the Parijataka (wish-fulfilling tree), Apsaras, the beautiful celestials’ maids, Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, Varuni, the goddess of liquor appeared one by one. Finally, Lord Dhanwantri, the god of medicine, appeared holding the pot of amrita. The Asuras forcefully snatched it, and refused to give it to Devatas. It is here that Lord Vishnu incarnated as Mohini, the enchantress, the most beautiful female form in the universe.

Vishnu’s incarnation as Mohini was a lady with divine beauty. Mohini came with the Amrit pot to the battle place and she suggested devatas and asuras to sit in different rows, so that she can distribute Amrit among them. All the Devatas and asuras agreed. When Mohini started distributing Amrit to the Devatas. One asura, Rahuketu, sat in the row of devatas and drank the Amrit. The Sun and the Moon God noticed him and they informed Mohini; however, by that time Rahuketu had already became immortal.

Lord Vishnu as Mohini was enraged and cut off his head with his Sudarshan Chakra. Rahuketu could not die but his head was separated from his body, his head came to be known as Rahu and his body Ketu. It is therefore, the two are considered immortal and important.
