What is Hartalika Teej?

Hartalika Teej is one of the most important festivals that is celebrated by women in the month of Sawan and Bhadrapada. The other Teej festivals are Hariyali Teej which is also known as Shravana Teej and Kajari Teej. This occasion takes place on the 3rd day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Women observe a fast and also do a Hartalika Teej Puja on this festival to attain the blessings of Ma Parvati so that they can get a husband like Lord Shiva or if they are already married then they pray for their husband’s long life. Hartalika Teej Vrat is considered as one of the primary Vrats in the Hindu religion and auspicious for both unmarried and married women.

This Vrat can even be performed by widows to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Ma Parvati. People also make idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati from sand and worship them to attain a happy and blissful married life. This Vrat was first observed by Ma Parvati so that she can get Lord Shiva as her husband. It is also observed by the women who want to get the happiness of being a mother. One should remember that it is auspicious to worship Lord Shiva and Ma Paravati in Hasta Nakshatra of the 3rd day of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month.

How Hartalika Teej is celebrated:

• The festival is celebrated in different parts of the country with great enthusiasm and zeal. On this day, women dress-up beautifully in a new saree and attractive jewelry.

• Green is the preferred color for this occasion and every woman desires to look as beautiful as possible. In the middle of all these things, women also observe a fast for the welfare and long life of their husbands.

• Women get up early on this day, wear fresh clothes, and look as beautiful as they can. They also worship idols of Lord Shiva and Ma Parvati with flowers, Bilwa leaves, and incense sticks.

• At this celebration, ladies sing and dance together. They even apply Mehandi on their hands and mother-in-law and daughter-in-law exchange gifts.

• For more benefits, one can also recite the mantras which are associated with the Hartalika Puja. The Hartalika Teej fasting is done for one whole day and the fast is broken after the next morning after finishing all the rituals.

The story behind Hartalika Teej:

• As per the Hindu Mythology, Ma Sati immolated herself due to which Lord Shiva broke down and he observed penance for years. Ma Sati incarnated herself as Ma Parvati and she was born in the family of Parvat Raj. After this incident, the first word that she uttered was ‘Shiva’.

• The only dream of Ma Parvati was to marry Lord Shiva but this was not possible. Ma Parvati left all the materialistic pleasures to lead a simple life in a cave with Lord Shiva who was worshipping. This selfless devotion of Ma Parvati pleased Lord Shiva and he finally agreed on marrying Ma Parvati. Hence, the reunion was complete.

• The festival is also celebrated as the union of Ma Parvati and Lord Shiva. It is also believed that the word Hartalika is made up of 2 words ‘Harat’ and ‘Aalika’ which means ‘abducting a woman friend’. According to history, Ma Parvati’s friend took her to the forest when her father was forcing her to marry Lord Vishnu against her wishes.

Hartalika Teej Significance:

• There's a prominent significance of Hartalika Teej in the lives of both married and unmarried women. According to Hindu mythology, this day is considered as the most auspicious day for observing a fast and worshipping for the long life of the husband. Women also keep are Nirjala fast for their husbands which bestows success and good health to them. The Hartalika Teej Vrat date is also the 3rd day of the Shukla Paksha.

• It is highly popular by the name of Gowri Habba in the southern states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. The worshippers seek the blessings of Ma Gowri for a healthy and happy marital life. This is the best day for women to dress well and celebrate the day with their friends with great enthusiasm.

How to perform Hartalika Teej Puja:

• This auspicious Puja is performed in the morning, women should get up early and should wear neat and tidy clothes. They should dress-up in new clothes, looking beautiful is an important part of the festival as women wear beautiful traditional attires, mostly sarees.

• Women wear green sarees, green bangles, golden bindis, and kajal along with henna (Mehandi) on their hands. They worship Lord Shiva and Ma Parvati by going to a temple. After, returning from temples, they seek the blessings of their husbands by touching their feet.

• In the evening, the women again take a bath before the sunset and dress-up like a bride. They make idols of Shiva and Parvati from sand or clay. They then offer Bilwa leaves, flowers, incense sticks, and lighting Diya to the deities. Teej Vrat is completed when the fast ends and worshipping rituals, the next day morning.

Teej Mantra:

The following Mantras must be recited on the day of Hartalika Teej to invoke the blessings of Ma Parvati: ॐ उमाये नम:। (‘Om Umaye Namah’) and ॐ पार्वत्यै नम:। (Om Parvatayi Namah.)
